Many seniors suffer from dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, and other memory problems. Seniors may become confused about where they are or forget the names of friends and family members, and react with frustration, agitation, or fear.

Caring for a person with memory problems can be challenging, and it’s important to provide a good living environment that helps fill the gaps in a person’s mental recall.

Memory care is a specialized type of senior living geared toward the needs of individuals with memory issues. It provides a loving, supporting environment to help the affected person live the best life possible.

Premiere Cottages offers memory care for any resident in need, along with other assisted living and senior home care services in the Long Beach area.

Memory Care

Aspects of Memory Care

Memory care is distinguished from standard senior care and assisted living by a few specific practices. For a person suffering from Alzheimer’s or dementia, it helps to set a structured routine, which helps the person navigate their day in case they forget where they are or what they are doing.

Also, staff will check in more frequently with residents experiencing memory problems. Residents may forget that they have an activity scheduled, or if a meal is coming up, and staff will be extra aware to give them reminders and guide them to where they need to be.

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, about 6 in 10 Alzheimer’s or dementia patients are prone to wandering. This can be a danger for seniors staying in large facilities, as they can get lost. Facilities often compensate with color-coded doors and hallways, and sometimes give residents tracking bracelets that enable the staff to monitor their location.

Fortunately, these measures are unnecessary in the intimate setting of Premiere Cottages. Our facilities are converted residential homes, so there is very little space to get lost in, and our staff is able to keep a careful watch for wandering residents.

Senior Care Services

Memory care residents can also take advantage of the services we extend to all residents, such as home-cooked meals, assistance with daily hygiene and mobility, group activities, transportation, and more.
